GEOFFREY FRY - Order of Australia

Like many others in the band world who have known Geoff Fry for a long time, we are aware of his lifelong devotion to brass bands and the level of professionalism he has brought to the administration of band organisations as well as National and State Championships, it was great to see him listed amongst the recipients of an Order of Australia Medal in the Australia Day Honours List yesterday.

Even more exciting was the fact that out of the 55 or so people in Australia who received this award, Geoff was singled out by Channel Nine News for an interview and the ABC for mention. Channel Nine News also played footage of Geoff as a drum major.

Although the Brisbane City News has the headline "Women Top the List", they've printed a photo of Geoff and the following article:

"The City has bucked the national trend with more women than men named on the Australia Day Honours List today. A band leader, an Australian film and television industry administrator, scientist, cancer fundraiser and former councillor have been named among 446 people - 317 men and 129 women - to feature on the list. Five inner-Brisbane residents were named on today’s Australia Day Honours Awards. Bowen Hills’ resident Geoffrey Fry was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia services to music, particularly through band organisations. He is currently the Queensland state councillor of the National Band Council of Australia."

The Order of Australia doesn't come easily and there is fierce competition - usually the sports people get the publicity. So this is great publicity for bands and all bandsmen and women should congratulate Geoff for his worthy award.
